Hi my name is Tuesday! I am 17 and an incoming senior at Oakland School for the Arts. I have been in the Theatre department there since the sixth grade and have been acting and dancing on stage since I was 4. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown increasingly interested in film direction. I’ve directed music videos and plays, as well as short films. Currently, I’m directing a stage production of The Princess and the Frog at the Black Repertory Theatre youth summer camp in Berkeley. During a typical summer I enjoy interning in LA, spending time with friends and family and traveling to places like Maui, New Orleans and Paris.
As an art school student, I am naturally a very art centric person. I have a deep interest in all artistic forms of media, and seek to learn about art history and the local art cultures and communities throughout the Bay Area, LA and globally. I particularly love Basquiat (and the neo expressionism scene of 1970s New York), the fashion genius of Virgil Abloh and Vivienne Westwood and the ideas that bend the curve of modern fashion. Additionally I appreciate the incorporation of social ideologies, philosophy and personalized culture in independent film. My identity as an artist is so important to me because it’s rooted in family. My love for directing comes from watching my dad work in entertainment as a director and executive producer of films, music videos, and ad campaigns.
I am a huge music lover and need to have all the music I like accessible to me at all times. I’m planning on bringing a MP3 player and earbuds on the trip with as much music I can possibly download. Some of my favorite artists are Amy Winehouse, Dean Blunt, Cocteau Twins, A$AP Mob, Elvis, Debbie Deb, Lucki, Playboi Carti and Prince, all of whom are in heavy rotation currently. I also love live music. My dream concerts are Lil B, Lucki, and Frank Ocean. I enjoy attending music festivals like Camp Flog Gnaw because of the overall energy and that you get to watch smaller artists before they become big. Seeing Doechii perform at Flog Gnaw in 2024 well before any of her Grammy nominations was such an amazing experience.
Despite being an actor and loving the spotlight, I can be surprisingly reserved and introverted at times although I’m great at getting a crowd’s attention, projecting, and handling conversations when necessary. I enjoy new experiences and I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes after conquering new things, even if I face some challenges or moments of discouragement. I like emerging myself in communities and cultures for the first time and getting to learn about things by actually being face to face with it so those are the things I’m most excited about doing during this trip. Another thing that excites me is trying new foods and snacks wherever I travel to! My nervousness is primarily rooted around not being away from home for this long. I find the most peace and sanctuary in my room and as an only child, silence, privacy, and not having to be social around all hours of the day are some important things that keep me functioning the way I’m used to. I’m also very family oriented. I’ve had grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins within the Bay and in driving distance to me my whole life, and I very rarely fly without my mom or an extended family member so my nervousness about getting homesick applies to family along with my room. Having such a limited amount of time that I can speak to my mom and update her personally is the most nerve racking part of the trip but I know it will lead to some great conversations and photo sharing when I come back.
I truly appreciate everyone in my village for supporting me on this new and exciting journey to Panama! I can’t wait to make life-long memories and new friends and look forward to keeping everyone up to date on my trip experiences. Thanks for visiting my blog!
With Love,
Tuesday
