Saludos familia, from the leaders of the day, David, Aniya, and Jocelyn. Today was our last CAP Day. Guess what?! We finished before lunch time today, with all our hardwork, dedication, and perseverance. But first, let’s get into how our day started.
As leaders of the day we woke up at the crack of dawn; 6:00 am. We proceeded to wake the rest of the islanders up at 7am SHARP. We had a delightful breakfast; pancakes, eggs, strawberry juice and fruit (yummy). We then packed up the bus with jugs of water, shovels, and our hearts full of passion. On the bus we kindly reminded everyone the Question of the Day, “What have you learned from working with the community? Who’s one person you’ll miss?” While walking to the work site under the burning sun, we were greeted with beautiful smiles of families within the community. We went straight to work! We split into groups, one to clean the trash up in the house and another to gather the cement and gravel. Once the trash and boulders of rocks were picked up, in the words of our PC Nacho we began clang clang clanging. We started at 9am and finished around 11:40 am then we returned to the accommodation at 12 for lunch.
After lunch we had a self-reflection meeting, where we reflected on the question of the day and thought back to last few days here in Constanza. We looked back on our progress on the CAP. As a group we refleted about our strengths, weaknesses, and what we can take back home for future success. After we broke for free-time, where everyone supported local business with the remainder of our pesos. David bought 3 paddle boards and broke all 3 (sorry, Mom). Jocelyn bought some souvenirs and ice cream. Aniya bought a lot of snacks that she probably won’t eat.
For dinner we enjoyed some GOOD burgers and a crisp Kola-Real. Going into our nightly meeting, we further indulged into the quote of the day, “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move into the opposite direction” – E.F. Schumacher (an economist). We believe that bonding with the community and learning what they needed was a necessity in maintaining a sustainable community, which was our main goal from the first day of working in our CAP days.
All in all, WE DID IT!!! We actively worked together as a group and effectively communicated what had to get done. Through laughs, dance breaks, and passion, the day ended with big love from everyone, to everyone.
Love,
David, Aniya, and Jocelyn
