We all are one

Good Morning from the leaders of day 5, Adrianne and Madeline!

Today’s day was focused on the theme immigration. In contrast to the rest of our days we started the wake-up calls at a early 6 o’clock instead of our normal 7 in order to get onto the bus for the beach on time. Once we gathered everyone downstairs in the courtyard we did a quick headcount before handing out boxed breakfasts, consistenting of ham, cheese, and lettuce wraps.

After the bumpy, but worth it, bus ride we arived at Puerto Plata to meet with Dr. Reginald Kerolle. We gave a introduction that continued the information from the documentary yesterday called, “The Price of Sugar’. Which discussed the sugar plantations in the Bateys in the DR and the process it takes for a family to end up there. The problem is still present in the DR as Hatians crossed the border are promised better living conditions and go through many hardships to end up on military guard plantations. There they live in unsuitable living situations. This showed us to not take our necessities for granted and see the perspective of Dr. Kerolle on why the mission of his inititave is so important.

Then after giving Big Love we took off again on the bus to the resturaunt for lunch, which was more buffet style with an opening seating room with fresh air. After we did what most of us were eagarley waiting for, the beach! But, first the hotel with some new roommate arangments. At the beach all of us participated in swimming in the beautiful ocean, playing in the sand, and some volleyball before walking back to the hotel to enjoy some time at the pool before dinner.

We had so much fun today as the beach in Sosua and the Kerolle Initiative’s presentation. Reminding us that while our experience in the country is beautiful there is a rich history we can immerse ourselves in to make us appreciate our lifestyles even more. There is much to appreciate and learn for all of us. We can’t wait for tomorrow for another fun and educational day as the days of our trip fastly fly by.
