sustainable DEVELOPMENT: DAY 5

We started our day off with a trip so a high school in the town Villa de Los Santos called Colegio Colonel Segunda Villarreal. The objective of our visit was to learn more about the community action project we will be participating in for the next three days. We were greeted with a warm welcome by students a part of an agricultural club whose goal is to strengthen the sustainable development within their school. The purpose of our visit was to listen to a presentation about a project they thought would help their schools and community as a whole: rebuilding a tree nursery on the school grounds.

We received a tour by the students where they showed us around the space that we were going to be working on alongside with them.

We had also been informed that the reason they chose this project for us to help with was because they originally tried to create something like this previously, but it didn’t work out because of problems with people not knowing how to keep a nursery running, so their solution this time is to install a watering system to make it easier to take care of. Additionally drinking water has become unsafe to drink due to deforestation and poor drainage due to cattle and other factors. they hope that growing and planting these trees will eventually help their community and encourage others to do the same.

We had also spent a little time playing frisbee with the students. Once we returned to the hotel the students had some free time outside of the hotel to explore the city before returning to work out the logistics of the project. Eventually, once we created our plan we the presented to a member of the Peace Corps that is helping us out over the next 3 days, were looking forward to working with them and the school!

Hi everyone! I miss and love you. Excited to see you guys and the dogs. -Riley
