Super Sustainability

Hi all! This is –Lola and Jayla– the Líderes del Día, excited to tell you about our amazing day!! At the beginning of this sustainability day we asked ourselves, “What is sustainability and why is it important to integrate it into development projects?” We also considered the quote “True development must be in harmony with the needs of the people and the rhythms of the natural world” from Sulak Sivarsa who was a Thai socialist, activist, professor and writer. At the beginning we didn’t have a clear answer or idea about either of these, but as the day went on, we slowly started to understand and appreciate it more and more. 

We started in our beautiful hotel where we ate our breakfast in front of the mesmerizing ocean view. Next, we took a long bus ride back filled with fun conversations, games, and lots of memories. 

Once we got back to our hotel, we had a tasty traditional dominican dish – beans, rice and chicken. Then, it was time to discuss how we were going to tackle our CAP projects. 

Through team questioning and brainstorming, we have a good idea of how we are going to help out the local community. After planning, it was time to talk with Bernardo, who is in charge of Fundacion Alegria Incoente. It was a very enlightening speech where we learned about the needs of the people and what we could do to assist. Alass, it was time to answer the question of the day. People started to have a much better idea as well as a deeper understanding. We had a thorough discussion about how sustainably developing an area isn’t just putting in things that result in us boosting our own egos, it’s about giving people what they need: things like cement floors which would allow them a stronger foundation from which to build on and a clean surface for children to play on, among other things. 

Overall, we had an enriching and informative day!
