Good morning, friends and family. Justin and I (Lucas) were LDDs in charge of continuing the CAP project. I was abruptly woken up at 5:30 AM by Justin and Tristan–it felt like a fever dream. Unfortunately, the pipes were clogged, so nobody got morning showers–we stink. We both relaxed in our rooms until deciding to wake the girls up at 6:45 since they take so long. We woke everyone up gently until we had to get rough and create a song. We clapped and yelled until they yelled back at us. For breakfast, we ate scrambled eggs with ham (Protein!!), Yucca–a root, cocopuffs, and toast. Luz (our PC) had her 4th cup of coffee by then… The energy was certainly high today as Justin and I promised a surprise if we finished our Community Action Plan early. We didn’t know what the surprise was, but our acting was good enough for them to get to work.
And we were off! We began our ride to the beautiful community, Puntagorda. During our ride, we sang along to our favorite songs. Once we arrived at the community, Lucas and I led the group to work. We started by speaking with Almando and Pepe, going over the very specific and complex plan. Everyone got straight to work picking up shovels and pickaxes. Although it was very hard and stressful with changes in directions, we toughed it out and made progress. After various water and dance breaks, we managed to get through more than halfway, and everyone was dripping sweat head to toe. Then we proceeded to head back to the Villa for Lunch, which included chicken, veggie rice, yellow rice, and salad, which was very delicious. Then we headed back to the community for a second round of work, but thankfully, it was just a small part we had to finish. Drinking coffee and playing with the little kids made it more fun. After so much pickaxing and shoveling, we celebrated with the locals for installing their new pipes. Since we got off early, Luza and Jackson took us to town to buy trinkets and Ice cream, which was much needed!
It’s a profound feeling walking into a community so welcoming, all you want to do is help. Every smile in the neighborhood, every high-five from the kids, acted as fuel to our digging fire. Finishing our project almost felt a bit sad, because it marked the end of our journey with this amazing community. But I can say for sure it was the catalyst of our new journey, the journey to keep reaching out with kindness, the journey to find a way to “open our hearts” –you know what I mean, Mom. As Erin said, we didn’t just give people water today. We gave them a chance for a better way of life. A cleaner, safer life that everyone should have the privilege of experiencing. Tomorrow our group is getting a well-deserved fun day, in which we can hopefully reflect on our actions, and plan future projects to continue our work.
Ich liebe dich Papa, Mama und Olivia! And to Chaya and Razan, thank you for keeping up with us, and please stop trolling us about Wingstop (and Justin Timberlake)…it was very emotional.
Tambien, Hola Mommy y Daddy los extrano muchisimo y les quiere ensenar todas las fotos que tome, los veo pronto!
XOXO
Lucas & Justin
