Toni Mango

Alexander Milles

Where are you from?
Toni: I’m originally from Italy, but I’ve lived in the U.S. for most of my adult life. (Springfield, MA)
Alx: I’m originally from Honolulu, Hawai’i. I’ve also lived in Boise, Idaho and Bellingham, Washington—so a bit of everywhere! (Wilbraham, MA)

What are your strengths and weaknesses on this trip?
Toni: My strengths are perseverance and my ability to get things done no matter the challenge. My weakness? I sometimes struggle to set boundaries and put myself first.
Alx: My strengths are creativity and the ability to win others over—I love connecting with people. My weaknesses? Math… and early wake-up calls.

What do you enjoy most about traveling?
Toni: Traveling gives me perspective I wouldn’t otherwise have. It reminds me how much we all have in common, often more than we realize.
Alx: I love the sense of adventure, trying unique foods, and connecting with people from all walks of life. Every trip expands my world and adds a new flavor to my story.

What are you most looking forward to on this trip?
Toni: Being in an environment that isn’t centered around tourism—and having the chance to connect with authentic Dominican families. I’m also excited to watch our students develop new skills and confidence.
Alx: I’m really looking forward to those “ah-ha!” moments from the students. I’m also excited to see the differences and similarities between the Dominican Republic and my ancestral island of Puerto Rico—especially in the culture and food.

Window seat or aisle seat?
Toni: Window.
Alx: Aisle. I like to stretch out and help people if they need anything.

What’s a dish you tried while traveling that blew your mind?
Toni: Spicy noodles for breakfast in Thailand—it was unexpected but delicious.
Alx: An Icelandic hot dog! I didn’t expect to be obsessed, but I’ve already decided that’s one of the first things I’ll have again when I go back.

Have you ever experienced culture shock? How did you handle it?
Toni: Yes—when I first moved to the U.S. I felt it deeply. I coped by diving right in and embracing everything new.
Alx: Definitely. When I visited Nicaragua, my first time in a foreign country, everything felt unfamiliar and overwhelming at first. I got through it by trusting my group, staying present, and staying open to the experience.

What’s one thing you always pack and why?
Toni: I always bring a little pouch filled with spiritual mementos I’ve collected from different places. And of course—my camera!
Alx: Tons of socks and undergarments. You can never have too many. Comfort is key when you’re on the move!
