Day 2: JA1A-CHi takes over jarabacoa

Hello, families and friends!

We kicked off the day at 9:00 AM full of energy after a well-deserved night of rest and a delicious traditional Dominican breakfast. Then, we hit the road for a scenic hour-and-a-half drive up the mountains from Santiago to Jarabacoa, a.k.a the Land of Waterfalls!

Once we arrived, students got their first look at their new home for the next couple of days: Rancho Ruiseñor (RR). We settled in and jumped right into our welcome and orientation seminars. We refueled with a nutrilicious lunch of white rice, chickpeas, stewed chicken, and roasted eggplant *chef’s kiss*.

In the afternoon, we explored the city of Jarabacoa and soaked in the sights. In the city tour, we visited the local firefighters’ station (a historic gem!), city hall, the commercial district, and the legendary Saman Tree—as old as the city itself, over 150 years old. To top it off, students cooled down with some iconic ice cream from Ivon’s, a local favorite that’s been serving sweet treats for over 30 years.

Back at RR, we reviewed more essential information, such as money exchange rules, health and safety guidelines, and all the key details to help this trip run smoothly. Then, dinner time.

To wrap up the day, we proudly passed the leadership torch to our new brave and promising Leaders of the Day: Sean and Zaria! After a full day of learning, laughter, and new experiences, the group is settling in and gearing up for what’s next.

A good night’s sleep awaits—and tomorrow, we slay again!
