My Name is Robert Markuske, and I facilitate the Marine Affairs Program at New York Harbor School. This will be my first trip with Global Glimpse. Here is a little about me: how I got here and why I am going.
I will turn 42 while in Costa Rica with you all! Last year, while a Teacher At Sea, I turned 41 – my shipmates said it didn’t count; I don’t think those rules apply this year.

Prior to teaching, I was a National Park Service Ranger, framed houses, and did environmental advocacy. I’ve been teaching since 2011. I started teaching at New York Harbor School in 2012. The first class I taught was Global Studies, and for most of my career, I have taught a multidisciplinary course focused on environmental science, urban agriculture, policy, and outdoor education, working alongside students to solve emerging issues of our time.

For the past few years, I’ve set a goal to do something work-adjacent to educate myself and gain experiences that make me a better educator and ally to youth who wish to change the world, from a USDA fellowship to a Teacher at Sea and now a Global Glimpse Leader. It reaffirms that teachers can learn too! I am excited to be your leader on this trip and experience things alongside you!
After I leave Wyoming’s backcountry, I will prepare to set out for Costa Rica with you! I was in Costa Rica exactly 7 years ago at the time of this adventure. Grateful to go back, and it’s wonderful to gain these experiences with such a wonderful group of people, learning and leading.
See you at the airport.
