day 8: cap dIA dos

Hellooo families and all who are reading!!!

Here are your Leaders of the day: Jackie, Brian, and Leslie! We woke up bright and early this morning excited to make progress on our CAP (community action project). We started off with a hearty meal of pancakes with eggs and sausage. Boy did we need it. Thank you Ilka, Leonela, and Carolina for all of our meals through out the day.

We then left on our bus to Nutre Hogar where we picked off where we left off at. As we waited on materials to start our work, we played with the children (sooooo cute!). Some glimpsers took advantage of this time to clean the paintbrushes still wet from the day before (thank you Brian, Jackie, and Eason). This really sped up the time we needed to get into the nitty gritty.

Now for the most important part… What did we actually do? We continued our murals as said before. FYI shoutout to the blue collared workers who do this on a daily basis. They are Extremely overlooked despite the physical strain it takes on their bodies; because Girl….. we are BEAT. The Panamanian sun is no joke. But on a more postive note the collumns, signs and 1 out of 3 doors have been completed (and if not finished they are on track to finish).

As we all know it is day 8 and with more time and responsibilities we gained the privilege of walking around Las Tablas in groups of 4 or more without adult physical supervision (we had a check in sheet which we were held to). Through this experience many groups went to different places and saw glimpses of the local festival. We (Jackie, Leslie, Brian, along with the company of our fellow glimpser Jenny) specifically went to the local thrift store (AKA our second home at this point LOL), the dollar store, and walked the streets looking for a Panamanian hand woven bag that Brian was OBSESSED with. Some students even got to go to the AutoMac which is basically MCDonalds that “tastes skinnier” (I miss American portions).

After the fun and exotic adventure we came to the accomodation early so to pass the time us three decided to start our own bookclub with Jackie’s fantasy book (the things you’ll do without your phone). Then when everyone arrived we officially wrote our final drafts of the ‘Letters of Appreciation’ which is basically a letter going out to all of the supporters of Global Glimpse that made this trip possible (tysm btw). We had our health check in before dinner to make sure all our bodily functions were all in order as well as our young innovative, creative, expressive, determined, beautiful minds. Finally aside from our nightly check in, we had dinner which was Tostones and Carne followed up by a mini salad and this Horchata-like drink.

To conclude, through this we learned the importance of communication, delegation, initiative, and hardwork. It takes more than what is ‘assigned’ to you to have a successful and overall meaningful project.

I get so sad when I hear a woman yell “Samuel” because I think of my mom. I also really miss my little brother and messing around with him. I hope he is crying and missing me right now. And lastly, my sister, I really miss your vibes and how we would both sleep in for half the day. I am waking up early and I don’t know if I can break this cycle. Although, unlike Jackie, I have hot water <3.

Leslie- I also didnt explain to my parents how this works but if MIRACULOUSLY you guys found this I wanted to let you guys know that I miss you soo much more than you can imagine, and I’m hoping that my little sister isn’t driving you crazy by this point. I love you guys and I can’t wait to see you guys in a couple days… BTW I am a-ok.
