Day 7: waterfall hike and environmental justice day

Hi!! It’s Morgan and Leia!

Today we hiked down to a beautiful waterfall called Las Trillizas, or The Triplets, named for the three waterfalls next to one another. The water was cold but, we all still went in and had a great time. We took some of the best pictures yet. The hike was full of mud and slippery, steep stairs; however, bamboo sticks that grew along the edge of the trail were made into walking sticks that *mostly* stopped wipeouts. After the hike back up, we had a delicious lunch at the neighboring restaurant.

Once we returned to the accommodations, we listened to a presentation from Andrés Zuñiga, an environmentalist, philosopher, and educator. He spoke to us about the importance of preserving Costa Rica’s environment as it hold over 5% of the world’s biodiversity even though it’s smaller than West Virginia. We acted out a scenario of a big hotel corporation attempting to build on land in Costa Rica. One group played the role of the hotel, one the community, and one the government. We came to a compromise of building the hotel, while still benefitting the local community and preserving the environment.

After dinner, we ended the night with some amazing karaoke!

Goodnight, and talk to you on the 9th for our last phone call before we return!

Hi to my mom, dad, June, and Josh! I miss and love all of you so much. I can’t wait to see you in 4 days! -Leia p.s. June thank you for keeping my fish alive <3
