Day 5: mOVING AND CONNECTION

Today was immigration day, waking up earlier then usual, and we had our breakfast on the road, enjoying some ham and cheese sandwiches. After three hours of driving and some beautiful views of the mountains, we ended up in Puerto Plata, where we watched an inspiring presentation by Dr. Kerolle from the Kerolle Initiative for Community Health. He gave a presentation about Haitian immigration and the history of the Dominican Republic. He also explained his struggles and challenges through finding trust within the community and persuading the people that his work is worth their time. He explained that the initiative is self-sustainable and communities do not rely on their organization to keep it running.

Soon after, we enjoyed a meal at a restaurant and went to check-in at our beautiful, beachside hotel, which had victorian architecture from 1896. We quickly changed into our bathing suits and went to the beach, playing volleyball with the locals, swimming, and enjoying the warm weather. Beach vendors sold the glimpsers some fresh fruit, delicious brittle, and roasted nuts.

Following our time at the beach, we came back to the hotel to enjoy some free time at the pool, where the glimpsers had the opportunity to call back home and play pool games, like Marco-Polo.

Approaching the end of the night, the glimpsers enjoyed dinner with a wonderful sunset view and took many photos by the water.
