Student Trip Blog

Vamo’ Pa’ La playa 🌊

Hello, Wonderful People! Bella and I (Cloey) have yet another blog for you to let you know about our Immigration Day and how it went! Today we woke up bright and early; maybe a little too early… Nonetheless, the day was a blast!!!

To start off the day, after banging on everyone’s door to get them up, we gathered in the kitchen to start off our mental warmup, so that we can get everyone’s brain prepared for what we would be discussing today. We then continued to prepare what we needed for the road and took our breakfast on the go made by our lovely Abuelita and Mama. Once we got on the road, we started jamming (yes at 7:30 in the morning). Eventually, everyone napped for the rest of the 3 hour bus ride. Finally, we ended up making it to our guest speakers’ house (Dr Kerolle) who spoke to us about what he has done for his community over the past 19 years.

Dr. Kerolle talked to us but many things. He was helping immigrants who migrated to the Dominican Republic to find work and because the Dominican Republic was looking for workers to harvest sugar. Eventually, when all those Haitians ended up in the Domincan Republic, they ended up living in “Bateyes” where 5-10 families were share in one space alone without electricity, running water, and a bathroom. He and his team worked together to go to the Bateyes and help those in need of healthcare because, unfortunately, that was not a luxury they were given.

Afterwards, we finally were on our way to the beach and when we got there. We checked in, got changed, and started heading to the beach. We went by foot because it wasn’t that far of a walk. First impressions of the water and it was very clear and not too cold (Pedro Says is was not cold at all but Cloey says it is. Pedro disagrees). We interacted with a local and she started to play volleyball with our group. Afterwards, Dani (Indeed Pedro’s idea to get us ice cream) got all of us some ice cream because it was very hot today at the beach. When we got back, we enjoyed the pool at the hotel and started calling home for our 10-minute calls. We all ate dinner and to end our night, we had our nightly meeting. We had a very informative talk today about how the lives of immigrants here are very different from the immigrants back in the United States and we learned that a lot of people’s living conditions can get worse and will if no one wants to help. Finally, we handed off the torch to Diana and Shane as our LDD for Day 6!!!! (whom you will be getting a blog from tomorrow)

P.S Cloey fell in the sand multiple (Like a lot. Like 6 times-Pedro) times during volleyball #dontplayvolleyballinthesand 😑

Goodnight, lovely people! 💕

What a day! You all are experiencing so much and creating so many memories. Today, from your talk, to the beach (which that water looked amazing from the picture), topped off with sand volleyball and ice cream, the best. Everyone’s blogs have been well written and informational, we keep re-reading them. The pictures are beautiful and nice to see you are all having so much fun. Thanks for sharing with us (Shane’s parents) your journey along the way, we appreciate it.
P.S. We caught up and replied to all of your individual blogging days so you will see our comments. Looking forward to Diana and Shane’s blog next.

What a great update – you all look and sound very engaged with the program and each other. I don’t envy the folks who are responsible for getting everyone up in the morning!
