Day 5 Immigration

Hello everyone its day five of our trip in the Dominican Republic! Today we woke up bright and early at 5:45am(we being Sicily and Malin). We then pounded on everyones doors to get them up, and to breakfast where we enjoyed decadant cornflakes. After that we took a three hour bus ride to a community of people living in the Dominican Republic of Hatian descent. There we recieved a presentation from a physician, Dr. Reginold. He talked about how he helps different communities and provides them access to healthcare that is not always available. In this community we got to spend time with many children that spoke both Creole and Spanish. We also learned about how the Hatians were asked to come to the Dominican Republic to work in the sugar cane industry, and are now struggling with immigration laws and ratial profiling; sending them to a country that is not their home. Many women in this community sold us jewelry that they made to provide for their families. Next we went to Humberto’s house where his family made us lunch with beans rice coditos and beef. Then we headed to Piergiorgio Palace Hotel and checked in, with a beautiful view of the ocean right outside our windows. Next we headed to the beach where we cooled of in the refreshing clear water, and played volleyball in the sand. Then we came to the hotel restaurant to eat a delicious dinner. After dinner we had a fun time on the dance floor with Sicily. We finished the night with our nightly meeting and writing this blog(you’re welcome) and went to bed.

Hi Willow – and fellow Global Glimpsers! Thanks for the updates on your very cool day. I’d ask if you’re homesick, but from the looks of things you’re having a great time. I’m sure the ocean water there is a lot warmer to swim in than in SF.

Hope you’re picking up some Creole and Spanish!
