Hola familia!
Welcome to Day 5 of Turrialba, Costa Rica! This is Jayden, Amelia, and Freja, your leader del dias. Today was a jam packed day, as we traveled to many different places and experienced many different things.

We started off with a delicious breakfast in the morning, where Chef Diego made some french toast, scrambled eggs, sachichon, and some fruit, granola, yogurt, and cereal. We played games as a mental warmup before we headed towards the school for our Cultural Exchange. Though most of us got drenched on the journey to the school, we still couldn’t wait to interact with the students. Jayden was super excited to fulfill his teaching dreams, and expressed how much it meant to him. With activities such as Sharks and Minnows, Red Light Green Light, Language Duck Duck Goose, Four Corners, Soccer, and Arts and Crafts, the students engaged enthusiastically with us. Though at times it seemed a bit chaotic, seeing the children’s smiles and laughter was really rewarding and warmed our hearts. We enjoyed a lunch graciously provided to us by the school, where we had Casado (Rice, beans, carne y salsa, picadillo and salad).

After our time at the school, we headed back to the accommodation for a few minutes to change out of our soaking wet clothes, and then headed to a cheese farm. Our host, Carla, instructed Kamara and Ariana on how to milk a cow, and then Tate and Reny on how to turn the milk into cheese. She let us taste three different types of cheeses she made, all of which were very tasty. We gained some very insightful knowledge about how cheese is made, along with how local businesses stayed sustainable and helpful to the environment. Carla taught us about how she created her own fertilizer and the steps she took to reduce her impact on the environment. She also informed us about the importance of shopping locally and being mindful of large production companies, because many tend to use child labor and other bad practices in their production process. Along with learning about cheese and sustainable businesses, we got to experience a beautiful view from the mountaintops.

Once we returned from the cheese farm, we changed once again into nicer clothing to prepare for a trip to downtown Turrialba for dinner at Fratelli’s (Italian restaurant). We enjoyed several large pizzas, including but not limited to PEPPERONI, margarita, barbecue, and pesto chicken. We had a great time bonding and laughing with each other while talking and taking pictures. The bus ride back to the accommodation was full of laughter and song, before we winded down with our nightly meeting and bonfire.

Today was our busiest day yet, however we still enjoyed the time we spent with the students, Carla, and each other. We learned how to be more sustainable as a consumer, and also how to become better leaders. We are more than thrilled to pass on the torch to our next leaders, Jackson, Jocelyn, and Reny.
Signing off,
Freja, Amelia, Jayden
PS. We love and miss our families!
