Day 5: CAP day 1 Execution

Hi friends and family today we were able to meet another Global Glimpse delegation that came to Turrialba from New York. It was a really cool experience getting to meet other Glimpsers who were very close to each other, very energetic, and inspired us to become more united like them. They were a really awesome delegation and hope their trip is as enjoyable as ours has been. We felt really excited after meeting them because they showed us a different atmosphere than our environment and allowed us to see how we may also become as close and united as them.

CAP is a Community Action Project in which we attempt to assist the community in any way we can to cooperate with local organizations and local businesses to create a sustainable affect that can leave a positive impact. Our project for this trip is to partner with the local sports committee to continue the work of previous delegations of helping refurbish the soccer field plaza. This involves painting the fence, cleaning the locker rooms, renewing the goals, and building a garden out of tires. Today was intended to be the first day of our CAP but due to weather restrictions we had to be flexible to change what we worked on. Our focus today was cleaning the locker rooms and paint brushes, and begin painting the fence in the locker rooms, along with preparing the materials for tomorrow. Today we were able to learn how to work efficiently as a team, and split into 3 groups in order to get tasks done in a reasonable amount of time. We had one group painting the fences, another group cleaning the locker rooms, and one group preparing materials which after they’d finish would help the rest of the delegation work on their assignments.

Due to weather restrictions we weren’t able to continue working on the CAP so we headed back to the base house and took it as an opportunity to bond. We played bonding games such as “All my people who”, reverse charades, Four Corners, and tournament style spoons. These exercises provided us a chance to get to know one another and create a more closer environment. It was really great to see everyone interacting with one another and brought smiles to all of us. We played all my people who which is a type of question based game where a person in a middle of a circle of people asks a question and people who apply to that question try to go to a new spot and avoid being the last one in the middle. This game really promoted people to see more friendships and bonds as they discovered more people they had similarities with. Then we played reverse charades which involves a large group of people acting out a given word and only one person guesses the word. This promoted teamwork and coordination for people to have a more fun and active time. We really got to see even more smiles and laughter as the game progressed which made the bonding moment even more stronger. After that we played four corners which we chose to keep up the vibe and overall positive mindset for tomorrow and the rest of the day. Lastly we ended off with a tournament style spoons and we held a prize for the winner of the game which was being able to go first for meals tomorrow. Bonding time provided us all an opportunity to strengthen our friendships and grow closer to people we haven’t spoken to thus far. Another plus is we also met a little buddy while on our way to the soccer field earlier in the day, it was a very cute averaged sized limping dog that DAVID kicked out in the very humid, cold, POURING RAIN with a broom. HES EVIL!!!(hahaha just kidding we love David our GGL).

Now we’d like to introduce ourselves and how our experience went as leaders and in the day.

Ricardo Montes:
My name is Ricardo and my experience as leader of the day went really great. I loved that we all got to be together and have such a bonding moment with each other. This opportunity to be the leader of the day afflicted upon me a feeling that will always stay with me. I really do believe we became a family and have more bonding opportunities ahead, this was a major turning point in our trip. I love that we were able to create a close bond with not only the ones we gotten close with but others who we haven’t had a chance to talk to yet. I really did enjoy the day and the trip so far I love all of my friends and everyone in this trip we all deserve each other and hope to see more bonding soon! This moment will establish itself as the turning point in our small community we have created.

Justin Jones:

My name is Justin and during this time that I was leader of the day, I would say I had a great time. I really enjoyed how close everyone felt today, and the opportunity to get closer with people myself. I’ve had some issues with my voice, as I’m losing it, but I felt that I could work around it with the help for the great people I had with me for leader of the day. The work was enjoyable as we were all talking with each other, and I feel like I can really see everyone growing closer by the day. I’m glad my day as leader has gone very well and my other leaders felt the same and I’m grateful that I was leader with Sophie and Ricardo. Overall, I had a great time, and I hope to grow closer with everyone more over the rest of the trip.

Sophie Owens:

Hi everyone!! I’m Sophie and I was one of the LDD’s for today! I had so much fun getting to start on the CAP with this delegation, and I can tell we are going to do some amazing work here for the community of Turrialba. Today I got to talk with almost everyone in our group of 19 AMAZING students from LA, and it is truly a special experience getting to hear about each of my peers hobbies, cultures, and interests that are different and unique from my own. I want to end off this blog post with a huge shout out to my fellow LDD’s: Justin and Ricardo, because today wouldn’t have gone as well as it had without you guys. We truly brought the hype to today’s activities, and I could really tell our positive energy spread to everyone in the group. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings us, pura vida!!
