DAY 5. CAP 1!

Hello to everyone reading our blog today. We truly appreciate you for taking time to read our blog. Let’s get into it from Damian, Josh, and Amir.

Day 5 was hectic to say the least. It was day 1 of our Community Action Project (CAP) and we had our work cut out for us. We left the cabin at 9:15am and went straight to acquiring our tools that took us 20 minutes to get to. The rain was relentless and going uphill was difficult. Once we got our tools we then went to the site to begin digging. The trench had already been dug by past Glimpsers but there was still a pretty big chunk that we had to do. We watched a demonstration by the local foreman who knew exactly what we needed to do to dig up a trench. We had set up groups prior, we put our gloves on, got our tools, and got ready to go to work. Then the plan that we had set had changed, it turned out to be 2 pickaxes and 22 shovels. Unfortunately one of the pickaxes had broken, so we had to work extra hard with only one pickaxe. Damien and Makai worked well with the pickaxe, giving other students an easier way to shovel the gravel out the ground. We had to make sure the ground was at least 3 feet deep. We worked through the rain, fog, and shivers. Once it was 11:30 am we made our way back to our cabins and enjoyed a well needed meal after the hard work, but we weren’t done…

After eating our meal, we carried our tools back up the hill to the work-sight. Without a moment’s notice we got straight back to work, but this time through the hot Costa Rican sun and the wet and muddy unfinished trench. It was lots of work and everyone was exhausted. Our clothes pretty much were unrecognizable but honestly it didn’t matter much to us because we knew that what we were doing wasn’t for us. It was for the people of Costa Rica and gave them access to clean drinking water because clean water is a basic right. Not just for us, but for everyone. So after it hit 3:45 we made our way to our cabin, tools in hand, walking downhill, and we had fulfilled our commitment for today. But we weren’t done, we are going back tomorrow to continue the work we started for the people of Costa Rica.
