CAP DAY #2

We kicked off the day with an early morning run around Park Belisario Porras, a plaza in Las Tablas, where we got a glimpse of what it’s like for the locals to get up to go to work and school. We then ate our breakfast and prepared ourselves for the next trip to Pedasi to visit Proyecto eco Azuero.
At Proyecto Eco Azuero, we met Yadariselt, a staff member of the organization. Upon arrival Yadariselt gave us a brief introduction to the organization’s contributions to the people and ecosystem of Panama. In the introduction she explained how they are creating a strip of dry tropical forest to restore the natural habitat of the Azuero spider monkeys, which are endemic to these forests. We learned that they are not doing this alone. Proyecto Eco Azuero partners with 32 of the local schools to educate the children of the future on why it’s important to protect these forests. Through teaching the youth, they are creating a domino effect of awareness.
Nearing the end of our visit Yadariselt taught us how to plant a tree properly in preparation for our community action project (CAP). We learned It is important to plant the trees correctly to ensure their well being and to achieve our goal of planting 1,000 trees!
