Day 3 – Exploring Panamanian Culture

Hi! It’s Lesley and Nahla, the leaders of the day for day 3. We have new updates for family and friends!

Today we went on a tour throughout the city, Chitré. The people here welcomed us with open arms and they are the nicest and heartwarming community. Everyone was so excited to explore around the city for Day 3.

After the tour, we went to go on a trip to a bakery called La Medalla Milagrosa. We met with Orlando, the owner of the bakery. He was so sweet and shared his wisdom with us. At the bakery, we ate chicken soup with carrots and corn as an appetizeer. The next course of meal included lemonade and a tray with rice and chicken, potato salad, and a small dessert/postre. After we ate lunch, Orlando gave us a tour inside of the bakery, and we had the chance to buy their delicious desserts. They had ice cream, jello, sweet bread, and cookies. To share our gratitude, we thanked Orlando and Yamilet (Supervisor of Bakery and Orlando’s Wife) for inviting us for lunch and we gave them a gift.

Our next activity involved mask crafting with Don Dario. During this worksop Don Dario explained the mask, Diablico, and how it’s used in a traditional dance the “Diablicos Sucio.” He showed us the process of hand crafting the mask with clay and we also got to be creative, painting the premade mask he provided. Don Dario had his grandson dance the “Diablicos Sucio.” We also presented him with a gift to show our gratitude.

Then it was time for Dinner! We had a burrito with chicken, rice, beans, and pico de gallo on the side. For our nightly meeting, we headed to the center of the plaza and our time as the leaders was coming to an end and we passed the torch to Arianna and Madelaine! In the talent show they presented us with a dance that started as them singing the US States but transitioned to TikTok dances.

Finally, reminders for all families, students will be calling home at 1PM Central Time so be prepared to receive a phone call. Families and friends, we loved reading your comments on the first couple of

Hola Ma, Te quiero y te extraño mucho. Pido que Josephine, Alaia, Gordo, and I guess Flaco, esten bien.
