Day 10 – Final Reflection

Community day! To us, the most important day of the Global Glimpse trip, if not the reason the organization has been so successful. We spent time with glorious and welcoming families, so much to the point where we become a part of their family, even if it’s just for a little bit. We held chickens, made delicious food, sowed traditional Panamanian polleras, and learned how much hard work it takes to keep a local business and dream alive. Each one of these families, in the small community of Espinal, welcomed us into their lives treating us like they’ve known us for years. With their projecting love and acceptance, we reciprocated it with smiles and laughs. We’ve all had a great time with the families and what they had to teach us, even if some of us were pretty afraid from the chickens. With our experience, we were both with the families that specialized in true Panamanian delicacies. Our first impressions were that we were going to be enjoying our time inside, but we were surprised when we had to prepare the food outdoors. For instance, we had made sausages with pig intestines, filled some corn-based dough with beef to make empanadas, and filled another type of dough with beef to make carimañolas. With no surprise to us it was amazing, even though we got a little messy. All global glimpse students have their stories, but this one is ours. Since Rob is going to sleep, I’ll speak for the both of us and say we love you mom and dad and all of our siblings and pets! Just so you’re not stressing out, know that we are having lots of fun and we are in great hands! We’ll see you in Boston! God Bless!

Angelica, seeing your picture holding that little piglet made me smile so much! ❤️ You look so happy and completely in your element. I love seeing you experience things like this and getting to know a different way of life. I’m sure this is one of those days you will remember for a very long time. This looks like it has been an incredible experience for the students, with so much more still to come! It was wonderful to see the cultural immersion opportunities through Community Day and how warmly families welcomed you into their homes. Being able to help make traditional foods and crafts, care for animals, and experience daily life firsthand is truly special.
Be sure to take every opportunity you can to practice your Spanish. Even a little goes a long way in learning to communicate. And don’t miss out on the local food either. Amanda, I’m sure you’re already on top of that! Fresh fruits like papaya and mango are so much more flavorful than what we can get back home. Enjoy every moment of it!
