Community Action Project Day 2

Hey all! It is us your glorious Leaders of The Day; Kendra & Josiane. Today we had another birthday, for the beautiful Kimberlyn. We started off the day with decorating the dining hall with balloons and some streamers, and of course we sang happy birthday. For breakfast we had French toast, eggs, ham, with some fruit on the side.

For our mental warm today, up we decided to have people do personal reflections on their attitudes and their work ethic from the day prior. We chose to include this in hopes of giving people the space to observe their own behavior and see what they could do better for the second day of our CAP. Afterwards, we had them engage in a compliments game, where everyone gave genuine compliments to one another in hopes to replenish the morale. It’s safe to say the energy was a bit lighter and happier after these activities.

Originally we had planned to continue our CAP, however the rain was too severe to continue as planned (literally rained on our parade). While we waited for the rain to end, we prepared activities for the cultural exchange at the local school by designing games & drafting arts and crafts for the kids.

In addition, we drafted out letters of appreciation to the supporters. We are so thankful for their support to allow us to come on this trip and experience this amazing opportunity in Costa Rica!

For lunch we had fish, rice, and french fries (yum!) For those with dietary restrictions, chicken was on the menu in place of the fish for them. This meal was essential for our work in the afternoon at the worksite. Although our day was cut in half because of the weather, we put in double the work and exceeded our goal for the day. There was a LOT of rocks to dig through, with only one pick axe (yikes!). Today, we made sure to have a working 15 minute work-swap and snack break system. This allowed for us to fight fatigue and maintain the strong morale within the group.

For dinner, we had beef, rice, and veggies. For the Glimpsers with food restrictions, there were large pasta noodles filled with cheese in place of the beef (I’m verryyy jealous, -Kendra). After we finished eating we watched a documentary about the effects of mass tourism in Costa Rica. This was for preparation for tomorrow where we’re expecting guest speakers.

Lastly, we recapped the day where we were able to hear the feedback from our peers and later pass the torched to our next leaders. We celebrated Kim with a delicious birthday cake and a rousing rendition of happy birthday.

To bad you all got rained out, but love the action shots of the trench digging. I hope your fish dinner was super fresh!

I hope you all realize how much of a impact you are making there, and the bonds you are building with each other and the community are really important as well.

I love and miss you, Hannah. I keep thinking of you while we are here in Miami, there’s so many mentions of the Hurricanes here and I know you would love it. Keep a eye out for Hannah cheating in cards! She’ll get you if you aren’t careful.

Everyone, keep up the great work and keep your spirits high. Think about the past few days and how much help you have been to the community you are visiting. Be proud! You are all doing amazing work!
