Hello all!
We woke up today at 7 o’clock and had a breakfast of ham and cheese sandwiches with tomatoes and lettuce. Then we all loaded into the bus and headed straight back to Altagracia’s house to continue our hard work. Our mission today was to level the floor, which we did by using the dirt and rocks surrounding the house. The rocks were used as a border on the outside to support the dirt. Though we had a little trouble with the rocks coming loose, in the end, we made it work.
At 12:00, we headed back to the hotel for a delicious meal of rice with lentils, chicken with peppers, and coleslaw. We took a small rest before getting back on the bus at 1:30. Then it was back to work on the house.
Our second mission was to start putting up the walls. We had one team sawing the wooden planks to the correct length and another team nailing the planks into the frame. We worked hard for two and a half hours, with multiple teams switching out jobs and taking turns with tools. We managed to put up one full wall, half a wall, and a third of the door frame.
After that, we went back to the hotel to freshen up and either do some shopping or visit the community, where some kids were even able to beat the local boys at basketball!
A highlight of the day was seeing everyone contribute to some part of building this house—whether big or small. Just like our question of the day, “How does it feel helping others? Can one person make a difference?”—we feel that everyone has helped make a difference in this project. We are grateful for the opportunity to help someone without the expectation of getting something in return.
Come back to see us finish our CAP tomorrow!
~ Big Love from Ella D. and TY
