We woke up at 7:00 a.m., as always, for our final CAP day, where we set out to finish Altagracia’s house. For breakfast, we had scrambled eggs, pancakes, and bananas—a hearty meal that gave everyone the energy to power through and finish the project ahead of schedule.
At 8:45, we took the van to the CAP site. Our final tasks included completing a few exterior walls, building an interior wall to divide the two rooms in her house, and partially constructing the roof. It was hard work, but thanks to our efficient teamwork—and our skilled sawers Brody, Joey, and Gio—we were able to complete the work by the end of the morning.
We returned to the hotel at noon and enjoyed an amazing lunch of rice, beans, and beef. It was also our final opportunity to call home and speak with our loved ones. Afterward, we reflected on the effort we had put into the CAP project. The experience truly changed our perspective on life, and it was an incredible thing to be a part of.
Following our heartfelt self-reflection, the entire group went out for ice cream, which was a sweet and satisfying treat. Then we had the option to either go shopping or take a hike. Unfortunately, those who chose to hike were rained out and had to return to the hotel. Meanwhile, the group that went shopping had a wild adventure after getting lost in the city—but made it back with some great stories.
Once everyone had returned to the hotel, we relaxed and hung out while waiting for dinner. That evening, we were treated to a classic American meal: cheeseburgers, fries, and Coke. After dinner, we held our nightly meeting with the excellent Leaders of the Day—Gio, Joey, and Brody (no bias, of course!). They passed the torch to our final Leaders of the Day, Jasmine and Anthony.
Then, the celebration began.
Our amazing coordinators—Francis, Miles, and Yoca—surprised us with a Fourth of July gift. We headed into the streets blasting music and lighting sparklers, ending our incredible Independence Day celebration and closing out Day 9 in spectacular fashion.
Gio:
Day 9 was one of my favorite days of the entire trip. Our group was able to complete our part of the house, which will be finished by the next delegation. Let me just say—building a house from what was once just a plot of land is mind-blowing. Honestly, this entire trip has been unforgettable. The views in Constanza are breathtaking, and the people here are even more so. This experience has deeply influenced my future and inspired me to live the best life I can. Also—hi, Mom!
Brody:
Hi Mom and Dad! It was so great talking to you today—I hope your boat trip was amazing. I had a great day working with the saw and hammer to help finish our portion of the house. Even when it started pouring, I still had fun playing cards with my friends. I hope you’re having a great time. I miss you and can’t wait to see you Sunday!
Joey:
Yo, it’s me! I’m having a great time in Constanza—it’s becoming one of the most memorable trips of my life. It’s really opened my global perspective. Even just talking to the kids in my broken baby Spanish and seeing the smiles on their faces when we play simple games and sports has been so rewarding. I miss home a bit, but honestly, I could spend more time here. You were right, Dad—life without my phone really is amazing. See you soon! Love, Joey.
