CAP DAY #1 Completed!!

Hey guys, this is Ellis, Laila, and Daniel writing. Today was CAP (Community Action project) DAY 1 and we had such a great time! We started our morning at 5:45 AM. After Breakfast and a Health Check-In, we hopped on the bus and headed to Playa Venao to the Save The Turtles Organization. With five groups of 4-5 people, we went straight into SAVING THE TURTLES!! To be most efficient we divided and conquered, splitting in two: one group cleaning out the office for the Save the Turtles workers, the second group working on the nursery, digging really deep holes and cleaning the sand in order to provide a good environment for the turtle eggs.

The work was difficult, but worth it. Knowing that we provided nesting areas for 60-70 turtles is a feeling like no other, it was very challenging at some points. Although we did almost faint (JK!) and we regretted life choices at some points… we perservered nonetheless.

Our adult leadership did an exceptional job at making sure we were accomodated for. We had ample breaks, including a snack at 10:30, and a lunch break at a beach resort restaurant where we encountered a few friendly stray dogs (that we unfortunately couldn’t pet).

After lunch, we went straight back to work, taking on different roles and switching the groups around to even out the work load. Some chose to keep the motivation alive by painting and creating “Save the Turtle” signs out of recycled materials.

We are all feeling very accomplished, and are very excited for our next CAP day tommorow. Please keep reading and commenting on our blogs to keep up. It’s the highlight of our day. Sending our love to the folks at home, don’t miss us too much, we’re having a lot of fun and will see you soon!

After the grueling work we went to a cafe and took this picture to celebrate our triumph!

LDD’s Ellis, Laila, and Daniel Signing off,

Hasta La Vista!

Wow! Another full day! I am impressed with all of you for continuing to get up and ready for such early mornings! What a dedicated group! It sounds like you worked super hard preparing the nesting area. What an incredible way to make a difference in the lives of so many turtles:) I hope you all take a moment to really acknowledge the impact you are making by taking part in this project! Lolo, we are so proud of you. We miss you tons, but know this is a life changing experience and will now be an important part of your story! Your fish are super, Hazel is making it known each night how much she misses you and Minnie (and the rest of us) eagerly await your snuggles. LOVE YOU!!
