The leaders of the day, Milina (Ma-Lina) and Josue (Ho-sway) started by wake up calls at 6am sharp. We started with a healthy and filling breakfast, which was cereal and Hojaldra, and we were ready for our long day ahead. We hopped on the bus around 8am to drive to the school where we are working on our CAP project (CAP stands for “Community Action Project”). We arrived in the field of the school where the green house is located and separated into 3 groups, 6 students were working at the Hydroponics station, another 6 were working at the table station, and the final 6 were working at the green house building germination beds. We were working with the project coordinators at the school, being Elizabeth and Jason.
Hydroponics:
The leader of this group is Milina. This group started with a rough sketch of our design. The design included multiple pieces of wood and piping which would have to be cut to fit our measurements perfectly. Our Site Manager Paco helped us with the designing and mathematics which would be put into finding the angles and side lengths of our wood and piping. After the measurements were done, we moved on to marking the wood and piping with the measurements for cutting. Paco and Jason helped cut the piping and wood with the saws as the glimpsers held it still. After the piping was done being cut, the glimpsers used sand paper to file the pipes down to be smooth and flat.
Table crew:
The leader of your group is your one and only Josue the goat. This group started cleaning some areas that had leaves and big rocks that people could trip on. After cleaning things up, we were stationed at a table where we were instructed to build signs for the greenhouse. We started with picking out wood with the totally legit lumberyard, and after picking out some wood, we decided to use an arrow shaped slab of wood as an “entrance” sign while we had a way longer slab of wood that we will paint “welcome to the greenhouse” on, but before we could we had to do a lot of sanding down and making the surfaces even enough for space. while we were doing this, me, JJ, Renato, and Ainsleigh all worked together on making a practice model for the potential table design.
Greenhouse:
The leader of this group was Seth!! They first started off by sweeping the greenhouse. Then, they got wood that were supplied to them for the germination beds. Mckayla, Angelica, and Jason all worked together to build the beds, they ultimately ended up building 2. Ray and Mckayla also made space at the outside of the greenhouse to make space to tuck in a tarp for the outside half arc thing of the green house. At the end, Amanda and Seth put a net around the half arc and used a ladder to put zip ties so it stays in place.
After our lunch in the schools biology lab, where we saw jars of dead bugs to a jar of a human fetus, Josue was feeling sick AGAIN and threw up for the 2nd time this trip. We then piled into our bus to head back to our hotel for the day. Once we got to the hotel at 2pm we had free time until 6pm which was dinner. During our free time glimpsers showered, went to get snacks at local cafe’s and grocery stores, or even took a nap. Once free time was over we ended our long day with a nice dinner which was fried chicken and patacones (fried smashed plantains). After our dinner we were treated with some chocolate strawberry cake which was amazing. Shout out to Angelica for purchasing it for us! After our little treat we ended the night with our nightly meeting, were we passed the torch onto our next Leaders of the Day, Amanda, Mckayla, and Ray.
