Cap day 1

Today us leaders (Alivia and Lia) woke everyone up at 7:00 am and we headed to our CAP project by the River Yaque. Our task was to turn a steep hill into an accessible walkway with stairs. We also built a trench for controlled water flow and added railings to make climbing easier. The project entailed extensive clearing of soil, rocks, and debris to smooth out the hill and build the stairs. Although the job seemed simple, it required a lot of strength and teamwork, with each group coming up with new strategies to be efficient. We had such strong teamwork and proficiency that we progressed farther than anticipated and even started constructing a second set of stairs. Today was a big moment for us to see a significant impact from the work we did, and we really got to focus on WHY we are here in the DR. A new bond was formed as we started the project, and we felt eager to get a lot done to help the communities here. Many glimpsers shared that today was their favorite day, mostly because we felt we were leaving our mark in the community.

At 12:00, we headed back to La Salle to eat lunch: salad, rice, beef, egg salad, and fried plantains. Soon after, at 1:30, we went back to the CAP project site. Although our time was cut short due to the rain, we worked consistently to try to get as much done as possible before we unfortunately had to head back home around 2:30. When we got back to La Salle, we had some free time, which we spent playing cards, reading, journaling, and playing volleyball. At 5:30, we held a Program Seminar to draft thank-you letters for Global Glimpse sponsors. At 6:30, we had dinner: rice, salad, yucca, salami, mashed potatoes, and cheese. We finished our night with free time and our nightly meeting, during which we passed our leadership to tomorrow’s leaders, Camilla and Vanessa. We can’t wait for CAP Day 2 and all that we will accomplish!
