culture day

What’s up youtubeeeeee, hey it’s Rae and Kristian and today we were the leaders for day 3. Today we were able to experience some Dominican culture through art and dance. We met some amazing people who taught us more about their culture and how they were able to express it in their own unique way. In the morning, we were able to meet an amazing person name “Gato”. He taught himself how to sculpt out of different materials at the age of 15, and has been doing it continuously for 25 years. Gato was very friendly and open with us even though we had difficulty communicating with him. The material we used for the sculpture was clay. We were split up into 5 groups and each group had the chance to design their own Deity, which is a God from the Taino culture. It was lively, creative and a very unique learning experience. After thanking Gato we were able to eat lunch and visit Paul, who is a self-taught dance instructor. Paul was extremely humorous and kept all of us engaged while learning dances that we’ve never done before. We learned Meringue, Bachata and Salsa, giving us a glimpse into his culture and identity. We laughed, got sweaty an connected over dance with Paul. Overall culture day was a very positive experience for us to learn more about Dominican tradition and identity. We were able to connect with one another and learn something that we may have not known before.

WITH BIG LOVEEEEEE, KRISTIAN & RAE <3
