Day 8: Immigration Day (No. 4)

Saludos a todos! Today was a very busy day for us. We had an early start by waking up at 5 in the morning to get ready and wake up the others. After we had breakfast, we went on our 4-hour bus ride to Juan Dolio. As soon as we got off the bus, we immediately felt the heat intensity! We then had lunch at our villa which was arroz con puerco. Then we headed out to ASCALA where we had an inspiring conversation with Dona Inez where she spoke on Haitian immigration and how ASCALA works to help Haitian immigrants. We then went on a small drive to the sugarcane fields. Domingo, the Mayor and President of the community spoke to us about the exploitation of field workers. He explained how workers get paid 250 pesos, which is equivalent to 6 US dollars (which is very frustrating). While we were leaving the accommodation the children from the community were very friendly as they waved goodbye. Immigration Day truly left a mark on us and the injustices many immigrants continue to face. We are now enjoying our villa’s pool and can’t wait to see what fun day has in store for us!

With love,

Kelly and Mariam
