Hello friends and family!!! This is Jose and Kaylie we are the first LDD (Lider Del Dia) students.
We started the day off with a delicious breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and cornflakes. After our breakfast we had our first Mental warm-up of the day; Working Like a Local. Here we learned about what it’s like to work for your money in the Dominican Republic. We were told about wages and how much they got paid a day, around 350 Dominican Pesos or 6 US dollars. Following this we went to work as a local ourselves, going to an invernadero or greenhouse to weed the coffee plants they produce there. What would have taken around four days for one person to do, we did in two and a half hours! Everyone was working hard and doing their part.
We piled back into the truck and came back to our accommodations to eat lunch, exchange our money for DR pesos, and have our final Mental warm-up. For lunch, we had rice w/ vegetables, beef, and an assortment of fruits. At our Mental Warm-Up, we learned more about Global Businesses and how they are impacted. Did you know that the DR relies on the coffee trade with the US for sustainability and the flow of currency?
We went on a tour to the Cafe Monte Alto, a coffee factory that is well known in the Dominican Republic. On the tour, we learned about the process that is used to produce the coffee beans. The process of drying takes a week or longer depending on the type of bean or quality. Walking through the factory there was a constant smell of freshly ground coffee beans. When given the first taste of coffee for the day, Roselyn was so surprised by the extremely bitter taste of black coffee that she made the most exaggerated face of disgust! Whoever saw her reaction, had a hard time trying to maintain a straight poker face so as to not laugh out loud and interrupt the guide. And to all of the families out there, some of us bought coffee grounds for ourselves or others. Be prepared for your child to come home with authentic Dominican coffee!

What a great day! Working hard and having fun. Glad that you had the experience of learning what it takes to produce a cup of coffee. (Love the hibiscus flowers behind the ears. Hi Mac!)
