Wassup y’all from Chitre!
This is Scott and Joseph, your LDD (Leaders of the day) leaders for today. Day three of our Global Glimpse trip was all about culture. We were able to immerse ourselves in the rich and diverse culture of Panama through the passionate works of a local bakery and the creative workshop of a local potter.
“Knock knock knock …” We jump-started our day by taking a quick visit to each of our fellow glimpsers’ rooms for an unruly awakening. We told each of them to arrive downstairs for a field trip to the Panaderia La Medalla Milagrosa, owned by Mr. Orlando, by 7:10. At his rustic bakery, we sat down first for a warm, full breakfast consisting of bread, sausage, eggs, goat cheese, and a side of fruit a long with passionfruit juice. After breakfast, we split into three groups of six and were given a tour of Mr. Orlando’s bakery. We witnessed his large amount of land along with the many crops that were growing in it, the process of making his delicious bread, the large artisanal oven he used to bake the bread, and the place where Mr. Orlando was born. We learned that this home could never be taken down because each house carries a person’s unique history and unites everyone to embrace their culture. After Mr. Orlando´s insightful and engaging tour, we were allowed to purchase some of his baked goods for ourselves. Later, we all gathered near Mr. Orlando and gave him a pot to show our appreciation for his time and for sharing his culture and traditions with us. Surprisingly, Mr. Orlando also had a gift for us. He gave us a mortar and pestle to teach us that business takes time to develop, just as grinding ingredients in a mortar and pestle requires a lot of hard work and time. From this experience, we all learned the importance of looking forward rather than backwards.

Next stop, pottery shop with Mr Lucretio, a native from La Arena Chitre District. In this area, there is a law that allows artists like Lucretio to receive free items from corporations; however, they must pay a transportation fee. Lucretio has been a potter for more than three decades and has been instrumental in inspiring his community and enjoying the significance of artisans. Aside from this, we glimpses were engaged with decorating pots and creating pots!!!

After a long day of cultural immersion, the group headed back to the accommodation (Hotel Rex in Chitre).

Everyone chilled until we went out for ice cream at a nearby local establishment. After finishing our ice cream, we headed over to what previous glimpses call (Panamanian Walmart). Everyone went a bit wild, purchasing items left and right (someone bought eight bottles of juice). Upon return to our accommodation, we ate dinner, held our nightly meeting, and passed the torch to the new LDDs, Julian and Itxia.

To be continued…….
