A (slightly altered) Fun Day

¡Buenas Noches!

Hey, this is Matthew and Micah, and we were the leaders of the day.  We woke up early at 7:00 am for breakfast at the temporary accommodation. We were provided with an array of fruits, cereals, and pancakes making for a nice and tasty meal. Then afterward, we reflected on the previous day: Immigration Day. We discussed the reasons for someone to migrate to a different country; how the cycle of poverty operates; and how immigration is both similar and different between the Dominican Republic and the United States.

We then took a long bus drive back to the base filled with rain and hills. But we still made the best of it considering the schedule changes that we were experiencing. Some of the boys were helping Ms. Chloe with her Connections app and Wordle (aww). We made it back safe and sound thanks to the bus driver, Noel. Next, we had some time to wind down from the long trip which was then followed by lunch and some leadership activities. For lunch, we had a filling meal that incorporated rice and corn, a selection of fruits and salad, and delicious juices. Mrs. Pam and Ms. Chloe led the group through some leadership activities that really helped us take a deep dive into what and who inspired and continues to inspire us as leaders. We also played a game to have some fun before the community action project (CAP) panel discussion.

We had 30 minutes of prep to get dressed and prepare for Ricardo and his companions from his community to arrive. We presented our plan of action for the CAP project where we will be traveling for the next three days. There was some new information and small changes to the plans to flesh them out. So, after they left, we held some deliberations about the new jobs that we were told about by Ricardo and implemented them into our plan. Then we had free time for some people to call their parents.

We then proceeded to have dinner which was very delicious and filling for everyone in the group. We also had a special guest with us today, Francis, who is the program manager for the Dominican Republic trips for Global Glimpse. He asked students for some feedback on how the trip was going so far and what we thought about it. Lastly, we had our nightly meeting with the passing of the torch to the next leaders of the day for tomorrow. Overall, today was a rollercoaster of a day since there were many ups and downs, twists and turns for us to navigate through. However, the group was able to persevere and still make the day a fun one.
