Day 3; Culture & Community Through Art

How would you describe a community through your voice?

Today, we had a wake up call at 6:40 am. Boy was that early. We ate breakfast around 7:20 am and this was our first time eating the breakfast at our hotel. And guess what, it was really good. It was hot and fresh and had a variety for everyone. Next, we left to our first trip of the day; clay making.

When we got there, we were greeted by Don Lucrecio. He explained  to us the history behind his clay making business. Long story short, his dad was the inspiration behind his hard work. He also explained how he created most of his tools and equipment for making clay.

Next, we painted our own vases which helped us showcase our personality. It also gave us bonding time with our fellow glimpsers. While doing that, some students actually got some hands on experience with making clay.

Then, we traveled to Elizabeth Moreno’s home. We ate lunch with her and her partners that was made by Elizabeth herself. We had chicken, lintel beans, and salad. The food was really good and everyone enjoyed the passion fruit juice that was given (that was the best part). The women of AMURAM, which is an organization that rejuvenates mangrove trees, we learned that that they created this organization to help their communities.

We then broke off into 3 groups where we learned about some of the art that defines one of the lady’s. Groups used paint and different materials to create different art pieces that are shown in the photos above. They also gave a backstory on their personal lives and how they got in to the organization.

We next came back to the hotel and had a program seminar about sustainability and our CAP 1 projects in preparation for tomorrow. We then had dinner which was two types of rice, roasted beef and sweet plantains. The food was really delicious. We then had our nightly meeting where we as LDDs gave and received pluses (praise) as well as wishes (opportunities of improvement).

We then ended the night off by passing the torch to tomorrow’s LDDs and a unity clap. We look forward to progressing into our CAP projects for tomorrow! Signing off, your first LDD leaders; Jalayah and Marlee!
