Day 11: CAP Day Two

Buen día a todos, Michael and Ari here. Today was CAP (Community Action Project) day TWO as well as the 4th of July, to which we woke everybody up at 7:15 to Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” to give everybody a taste of home and keep morale high. 8 o’clock breakfast consisted of a great meal of rice with beans, fried eggs, and bread to give everyone a lot of energy for the day’s intense workload. Throughout the day, we kept in mind the overarching theme that even a small group of people can still leave a major impact on the world.

At 8:45, we departed for the school to continue our CAP. Early on, we divided into four groups of varying sizes, one group was sifting sand and mixing cement, another group was cleaning the border around the gym of all weeds, moss, and any invasive plants that would otherwise get in the way of reparing the floor. A smaller group continued shoveling and moving rocks into the mixing zone where later on another group would mix cement. Similar to yesterday, we continued chiseling the gym floor to prep for its repair. 3 hours later, around noon, we left the school to go back to Casa Aquiares for a meal. We also met a West Coast Global Glimpse delegation, mingling with their students and sharing our experiences so far.

Lunch today consisted of burritos with a variety of different ingredients that we could pick and choose from. After lunch, we had around half an hour of free time before heading back to Aquiares School. The afternoon session consisted of similar groupings, however, we all ended up switching our roles so everyone had a chance to try a new task. Towards the end, we started working with our foreman to lay cement in a different area of the school. Some of us had some downtime playing soccer while others were finishing their tasks. Afterwards around 4:10, we headed back to our home base for a seminar and had dinner around 6, which consisted of pasta with white sauce, vegetables, and garlic bread. As always, we ended the day with our nightly meeting, in which we passed the torch to our final student LDDs, Liam and Courtney. We look foward to finishing our CAP tomorrow!

Best,

Michael and Ari
