Community Day

Today we had the opportunity to connect with the local Constanza community. We did this at a community center where we played and ate with the children.

We also spent our morning with five different local families where we lent a helping hand with anything they needed done in their homes or stores.

The time we spent with them was very valuable because we were able to bond over sports, food, games, and conversation. After the activities, we were further immersed when we sat down with the families and ate lunch that was made by both the locals and our peers.

This was very important because it symbolized unity through shared traditions.

After we ate and played with the children, we headed towards the community that we’re going to do the community action project. This community was hit by a tragic fire that lasted 4 hours and 7 families lost their homes due to this fire.

We got introduced to the lady who we are going to tear down her current, temporary home so that way we could build a new house for her. We are only going to tear the house down and build a foundation for her. Then the other students from other trips are going to finish our project. We also asked questions so that way we could have the information needed for our presentation for a later date on what we are going to do to fix this situation.

Today we learned the importance of community, and how it prevails when people look out for each other. A quote that encapsulates today’s experience is:

“I’m convinced of this: good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they are stones that don’t matter. As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late to do some good.” – Maya Angelou.

What a blessing for the family, and for you all experiencing what it’s like to build a home for someone. Don’t ever forget how good it feels to help others. We are so proud of Max and everyone supporting this family.
