Hi family and friends! Today was our first day of the very much talked about community action project!! After being in the Dominican Republic for 5 nonstop action-filled days, we’re all tired… so we’ll keep this short.
To get right to the point, after breakfast we took a short drive to the site of our CAP project: Manuel Usvaldo Gomez School. We had to be flexible, as it was a little overwhelming with this being our first day of the project. There is so much school improvement that we will be helping out with, choosing what to start with was challenging. Many supplies we needed hadn’t arrived yet, so we had to do with what we had at the moment. We started out by flipping, digging, and pick-axing compacted dirt and crabgrass, getting the soil ready for planting. It was extremely hot, but everyone showed up with great attitude and a huge dedication to completing our task with heart and determination (<the word of the day).

Although we started with beautiful blue skies in the morning, after taking a break for lunch and getting back at it, we were quickly met with a rainstorm. While prioritizing safety and health, we didn’t waste time and did an indoor painting project. We got our second wind and powered ourselves through the afternoon. We went above and beyond, and completed the garden transformation!

There’s still a lot of work awaiting us these next few days, but we’ve been productive and this only motivates us more. Plus, it’s always great to come back to our chef Ursula’s beautiful Dominican dinners to fuel us back up.
We’re grateful for this opportunity, it’s crazy to believe we’re officially more than halfway through. So, we’ll make the best of it.
Sending you love, your LDD’s…
Hannah, Mar, and Elisa <3

Great work, JA1B! Your delegation’s positive attitude has been evident since day one. I’m so impressed by you. 🙂
Wishing you a rain-free next couple of days (even though a rainstorm in DR heat can be refreshing)!

Awesome job Jara(bay)coa! I’m impressed by your resourcefulness and adaptability to some unexpected circumstances. The school looks more beautiful already with the added greenery.
