Mi Casa es tu casa

Hola,

Connection goes beyond our own home, it’s something that we make… Today, we visited powerful women named Dona Elizabeth, Sonia, and Raquel who opened more then their homes but also their hearts. We were flourished with knowledge on how they upheld a sustainable and safe environment. From their warm foods to the rich river viewed.

Beyond the nature of the Chitre, we saw a little glimpse of the world and how it is intertwined with the past. Today, we were very fortunate to hear the voices of an indigenous community by a father and his son; representing the past and future of indigenous communities. 100 years from today, the Guna Yala were on the verge of extermination due to colonial violence and neglect from the Panamanian government. Before the revolution began in 1925, there was rising tensions between the indigenous community and police officers. When women wore their traditional clothing, police officers would undress , beat, and rape them. Due to this violence, there was an uproar from the indigenous community against the police officers and the absence of the Panamanian government. The result of the revolution, was that America got involved and established the Treaty of Peace in March of 2008, meaning that any encroachment on they sovereinty against the Guna Yala would be penalized.

Thank for taking the time to learn about the culture of Chitre Panama!
