Coming out of our shell

It all started at 6:30am where Mia, Samara, and Mariana sheepishly awoke the others from their peaceful slumber. Everyone came to the kitchen for breakfast, where French toasts, eggs, chicken sausage, watermelon, and iced-tea was prepared. It was muy delicioso! Then, we headed to Playa Vernao on a bus drive for an hour half. On the ride we’ve passed farms filled of horses and even passed a guy riding one!

After taking in the beautiful beach, Playa Vernao, we spoke with two speakers skilled in sustainability development, they’re names were Alexandra and Ellis. Through growing up in the ocean, they gained the passion to become a key part of the organization Save The Turtles.

As the crew arrived to la playa Verano, we were quickly greeted by Tonosí, our speaker of the day, Alexandria’s dog. After taking off our shoes she led us through meditation, where we soaked in the sounds of the ocean waves. She then spoke about the daily roles of her career and the Community Action Project.

She delved into multiple themes and issues relating to the hatching of the turtles in Panama. It was very informative, mentioned the importance biodiversity, the origin of the organization, preservation, conservation, education, tourism, and collaboration between many programs internationally. The Global Glimpse students were intrigued and asked many compelling questions related to their mission. After learning a lot of important information, the Glimpsers headed back to Las Tablas to prepare materials to help the Save the Turtles organizers mission.

After we got back and ate lunch, we had an informative meeting about the CAP preparation, where we were split into designated groups, for our work on Wednesday. Afterwards, some glimpsers went out to explores the shops of Las Tablas for hats, and others stayed behind swimming, playing card games, and bonding. Ilka amazed everyone with her scrumptious tostones, earning the word of the night to conclude our nightly meeting.

Samara: Today, was an excellent day for my first day as LDD! Being a leader made me realize how essential it was to take inititative and take action in order to be a representative of your own community. Applying my best self, gave me the chance to create changed for others. My peers were collaborative, engaged and cooperative of all our tasks–which made me feel joyful , proud, and optimistic, because it displayed my strengths and weakness as a role model.

Mia: I’m very glad that I am able to practice my leadership skills today. I struggle with being assertive, but being with both Mariana and Samara encouraged me to come out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed being responsible for the timeliness and health of my friends on the beach and throughout the day. I am definitely not a perfect leader, but after today I feel more confident and welcomed into the group and hope I made that impression onto others as well.

Mariana: Thank you so much for reading! Please feel free to post encouraging messages to your Glimpsers!!

ttyl – buenas noches!
