Buen Dia Everyone!

Today, we woke up bright and early at 6 am to get on the bus to the coast in 3 1/2 hours. We stopped our meeting with Dr. Reginald Kerolle, who informed us about the history of the immigration between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as well as educating us about the Haitian population living in the Bateys of the Dominican Republic.

A Batey is a settlement for Haitian immigrants, usually located in sugar cane plantations. These settlements were given by different Dominican corporation under inhumane circumstances, including: lack of identity, little to no education, poor hygiene, starvation, and a higher chance of contracting a disease. After the meeting, we gave big love to the KICH corporation and headed to lunch at Janet’s, where we ate traditional Dominican food.

The crew then left to check into the Piergiorgio palace hotel, which was like a beautiful white castle on an ocean front, giving us a majestic view of the Caribbean Sea. The group took a quick walk to the Beach in Sosua and ran towards the waves through the burning sand. Glimpsers had a great time playing volleyball with locals as well as football. There was even a language exchange, which educated the crew on the islanders’ daily life. The group later went to enjoy the hotel pool with a beautiful cliffside view, and they ended the night eating traditional American food. After, we went to the Nightly meeting for a recap of the day and passed the torch.

We would like to give a big shout-out to Jazmine, Edith, and Sarai! Los amamos muchisimo.

There’s something magical about stepping outside your daily routine and heading into the unknown. This trip is about discovering new cultures and a new part of yourselves. Learn to be in the present and notice the little things. Like playing volleyball/football with the locals and learning the language. Stepping outside of your comfort zone may seem scary at first, but it’s where the best memories are made. Continue to learn and enjoy yourselves.

Jocelyn we miss and love you. Oh also your sibling is going to Lala this weekend. Your niece and nephews love and miss you.
