Good morning from Day 6 leaders Raymi Benduzu and Saki Sato (Representing Greenwich!)
We started off the morning by waking up our fellow glimpsers bright and early at 7:00 Am. Although many were still sleepy after sleeping in an airconditioned room for the first time in a while, everyone got up with great energy for the day ahead.
For breakfast, we fueled up with a gourmet spread of French toast, pancakes, scrambled eggs, cheese, pork, mashed potatoes, fresh pineapple, and juicy watermelon. We all ate looking at the ocean which had a immaculate view where many of us took last minute photos. The transportation back to Costanza was a 3 and a half hour bus drive where many of us took a nap. although drowsy, we pushed through to continue the day.
We had lunch back at the hotel which consisted of a Dominican classic with rice with beans and meatballs. Before heading out to our worksite in Las Gajitas, we had a mental warm-up where we discussed the importance of helping the communities in need. We reflected on how our time, energy, and small actions can create a lasting impact on the people we are working with.
Once we arrived in Las Gajitas, we were introduced to the community and got a firsthand look at the living conditions of some of the families. One of the most eye-opening moments was helping a woman move a bed out of her house so we could begin preparing the space for cement flooring. We learned that dirt floors can lead to respiratory illnesses and other health problems, especially in households with young children—another reminder of why our work matters.
After finishing our initial site visit and prep work, we headed back to the hotel and dove into a program seminar. As a group, we brainstormed and mapped out a game plan for how we’ll tackle the cement floor project starting tommorow. Everyone contributed ideas, and it was great to see the collaboration and leadership from all of our peers.
Dinner was simple but satisfying: mashed potatoes, broccoli, and cheese. Despite the long day, our group remained lively and vocal, laughing and bonding over the meal.
We wrapped up the evening with our nightly meeting and reflection. Everyone shared thoughts and feelings about the day, and it was clear that our experience in Las Gajitas left a lasting impression.
