Hello from Trevon and Julia! Today was a long but also fun day. First, we woke up at 6 AM and had some breakfast. On the menu was some yummy mongo and eggs. After everyone ate and gathered their belongings, we loaded onto the bus because we were headed to Juan Dolio. The bus ride was very long but we made it fun by creating a playlist that included many genres, we also made a stop at a gas station where everyone was able to get some snacks for the road. After arriving at a beautiful villa in Juan Dolio we all sat together and ate lunch. For lunch, there was rice with pork, fruits, and salad. After lunch, we loaded onto the bus and had a quick mental warmup. In the warmup, we learned about the sugar cane plantation we were headed to and about who works these jobs. We then arrived at Ascala, where we met with an immigrant worker and learned about his story and why he migrated to DR. He explained the good Ascala has done for him and how all he needed the whole time was proper documentation which he was denied because of his race. After the talk, we gave big love to him for sharing his wonderful story and went on a tour of the sugar cane plantation.
There we met Domingo, a local who works for the plantation, he also shared his story and explained how mainly immigrants work in sugar plantations for many reasons like no one else wanting to do them and because of the low pay. Towards the end of the tour, we tried some amazing sugar cane and headed back to the villa we were staying in. Then, we had a reflection and talked about immigration and how it ties into many things like poverty. We also talked about how we will carry this experience and all that we learned back into the US. After our talk, we ate dinner, for dinner we had TACOS which is what we had all been waiting for. After dinner, we had a nightly meeting but this time there was a twist, we all changed into our bathing suits and jumped into the pool for tonight’s meeting. Now, we’re having lots of fun in the pool. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings us! Have a good night, families we all miss you so much.
