DAY 4: CELEBRANDO EN EL SONIDO

Hello Everyone!!! It is your Líderes Del Dia: Ronaldo and Jhael.
Today we all woke up super early at 7 am. ): Then we all ate breakfast: cereal alongside ham, cheese and some bread. After eating, we all gathered around for a morning mental warm up which was overall an introduction to how our day will go. It was exciting to tell everyone how we could be gathering with the locals for a COMMUNITY DAY!!! After discussing all the details, we all went on our safari truck which we have lovingly named & we always get very excited to get on since we all get to listen to music of our choices.

After getting to our destination of “Sonido Del Yaque”. When we got there we all were scared to go down the very steep mountain that was awaiting us. When we finally got down the steep hill we all met Esperanza, the NGO Founder for their community. It was very fun listening to her origin story of the entire community. It was also very heartwarming to listen how they came from nothing to a large and self sustainable community. After hearing the story of the town, we were all split up into groups of 4-5 to go with our “Family’s” to help them with chores. Jhael and I were assigned to sweep the floors outside of the houses. It wasn’t bad sweeping but it was very hot outside. After sweeping we all got to take a break and got the opportunity to buy locally handmade bracelets and necklaces, woven bags, snacks and a lot more. After a long time of us deciding what to buy, we finally had the chance to eat lunch. The lunch they served was really good for it just being rice, beans and chicken.

After lunch, the kids in the community invited us to play games, such as “Dominican Ninja” and “Quack Dilly Oso” for the last hour before having to leave. Much of the group bonded with the community, and kids especially, making saying bye all the harder, only worsened by having to hike back up the mountain. However, we eventually made it to the top where we would then take a short trip to the department store, although most of us had already used up all of our money on stuff in the community. After this we went over to Los Calabazos, where we planned for our CAP (Community Action Project) with the local leaders, which we will execute in a couple of days. More to come on what the project will be later this week! It was very tiring, especially since we all expected to go home after the department store. Then we went back to our living space where we had our free-time for a bit until it was dinner. Before dinner we were all using the stuff we bought at the department store. After this we finally had dinner after a long day and it was pretty good since it was some american food. After dinner ended we all had to distract Eavan (Birthday Boy) from his surprise birthday party as we set up (shout to all the students who worked on helping set the party up). We all decided to play UNO No Mercy before our nightly meeting. During the meeting Ronaldo and I sadly gave up our titles of being Lider Del Dias. We had to pass the torch and crown Tristan and Mary Carmen Lider Del Dias. After this we all got ready to celebrate Eavans birthday with his surprise birthday party. We all hid in the dining area to surprise him and it all went as planned. This is how we ended off our day as Lider Del Dias.

Big Shoutout to EAVAN!!! Happy birthday Eavan and I hope when you get back you enjoy the Late Happy Birthday Party!!!

From Ronaldo to parents- Hi mom and dad, how are you? Hope you don’t make any good food while I am gone because I miss home food. (And my phone).

Hola, mamá y papá, ¿cómo están? Me estoy divirtiéndo y todos aquí son muy amables. Espero saber de ustedes pronto. – Jhael.

Signing off,
The best Lider Del Dias (Jhael and Ronaldo)
