Hola Familia!
We started our day with a hearty breakfast of rice and beans, fruit, eggs, and yogurt. Tomorrow will be our first day with Student leaders, so Jessica and Holli met with our future leaders to go over the agenda and roles.

Next, we got to immerse ourselves completely in Costa Rican culture. We split into two groups and entered the homes of very welcoming families. Holli’s group met Jessica and two of her three children, Owen and Alison. We learned about their schools, friends, holidays, and even Owens fame as a child singer throughout Costa Rica! It turns out, Owen has been interviewed by many news sources for his charisma and talent, and he’s only 9! He even sang Happy Birthday to Holli! Some other highlights of the day was Hafsa and Jah-Fi stepping up and asking to help Jessica make our delicious lunch. Additionally, Jackson got very close with Owen and was even offered a few trinkets to remember him by. Many of us also played games and passed around a volleyball outside with the kids! After our delicious meal, we all learned to make tortillas and empanadas! We were amazed that in such a short amount of time, despite our language differences, we were able to feel like part of their family.

Meanwhile, Mirabel and her granddaughter, Victoria, opened up their home to host Jessica’s group. After getting to know each other, Mirabel prepared fresh coconut water for us to try and showed us around her garden and patio. Did you know that Ticos use coconut water to lower blood pressure? Mirabel taught us that. Like Holli’s group, we also learned how to make tortillas and empanadas, and played games together. However, the highlight of our afternoon was eating Mirabel’s arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) for lunch. This simple, yet delicious, dish was prepared Tico-style with broth, tomato sauce, veggies, and “salsa Inglessa”. The group enjoyed it so much they asked Mirabel for the recipe, which she generously shared as we took detailed notes.
We are so grateful to our hosts that made us feel like we were members of the family. This kind of cultural exchange is how you REALLY celebrate Pura Vida! Tomorrow we are looking forward to our cultural exchange activity as we pass the torch to our first Lideres del Dia (Leaders of the Day). Buenas Noches!
