¡Hoy, el día que estábamos esperando, ha llegado por fin!
The day we’ve been waiting for is finally here!
Today was the first morning we were able to wake up in our beautiful home base in Costa Rica. We had the famous gallo pinto for breakfast for the first time and also walked to the pulpería (local corner market) to get some snacks. Many firsts today!
We played “speed dating” and “common ground” ice breakers where we got to know one another better. We shared answers to questions like, “What movie universe would you live in?“ “What is your dream job?” and “How would your best friend describe you?” As we discovered common ground, students shared statements like “I share common ground with those who speak more than one language,” “I share common ground with those who like reading,” “I share common ground with those who are out of the country for the first time,” and “I share common ground with those who are children of immigrants.”
We also had our first Community Action Project (CAP) seminar on the theme of Discovery (the first phase of Discover – Design – Deliver). Our Program Coordinators (PCs) Memo and Sharon shared about the years-long relationship Global Glimpse has built with the community and about past successful and sustainable projects Glimpsers have contributed to local schools and infrastructure. Students discussed the meaning of “sustainable” and of the importance of not being extractive, disrespectful tourists, but rather being listening, humble, globally-minded travelers.
During free time, students have enjoyed playing Uno, Guess Game, and sardines. 16 of the Glimpsers went on a short hike led by Memo and Sharon and got to see a sloth! Many people came to Costa Rica with the hope of seeing the country’s nature and biodiversity, and we’ve already been able to see so much just on the property of our lodging.
At dinner, volunteers identified all 22 Glimpsers by name and earned their cabin first dibs in the dinner line! Some people are still learning names (there’s a lot of us), but many people can already name everyone in our delegation thanks to lots of ice breakers and discussions in shuffled small groups.
At the Nightly Meeting, Ms. Sabrina and Ms. Kaylee, who modeled being líderes del día (LDD) today, passed the torch to tomorrow’s LDDs: Yunjey, John, and Leslie! For their talents, John showed off his soccer skills and Yunjey and Leslie danced to a wepa beat.
These three are starting off their 24-hour leadership shift by keeping their friends accountable to the curfew tonight and reminding everyone when to head back to the cabins. (And GGLs will also be double-checking to help them out).
Below are some photos of the day! Open the our T1D Google Drive Photo Folder to see even more photos from our trip!
