Cultural Exchange + Cheese Farm

Hi everyone! These are your LDD’s, Prabhnoor and Raquel!

Today, we visited a school in the community, Escuela de San Rafael. Here, we were able to engage with the students, 4th and 5th graders, through various activites, such as arts and crafts, language exchange games, and mobility exercises. We learned a lot about their educational environment and observed how their school functions with only two teachers. This experience gave us the opportunity to give back to the community by sharing a piece of our culture, while also receiving a part of theirs.

After we visited the school, we returned to the lodge to have a few minutes of downtime before departing to Finca La Florita (Turrialba Artisan Cheese Farm). At the farm, we were able to engage in a series of activities that included milking their Jersey cows and making fresh Turrialba cheese from scratch! The owner of the farm, Karla, educated us on the importance of sustainability and the significance of the relationship between consumers and production. Later on, we were quizzed on the topics and concepts Karla taught us, throughout the visit with a mini game of “Pass the Cow”.

Finally, we went in the very heavy rain and lightning to downtown Turrialba, where we had, no joke, 20 slices of pizza EACH!! We chatted with each other and had many laughs (HAHAHA) over dinner. Through it all, we built stronger friendships. To end dinner, we had a wide range of desserts from panna cotta to key lime pie. Overall, we had an adventurous day. It brought us all closer and gave us a glimpse into the Costa Rican culture.

Also, we see all of your comments and we love you so much!

Signing off, Raquel and Prabhnoor

Hi Raquel, Prabhnoor, and all of the Glimpsers:

We so enjoy keeping up with your daily blog postings and living vicariously through you as you recount the people you’re meeting and the activities you’re engaged in. These are priceless experiences that will shape how you see and interact with the world. If only all Americans could have such a Global Glimpse as yours, perhaps more would be more understanding and accepting of a shared humanity and respect for differences. Take it all in!

Raquel, we miss you so much and look forward to hearing many more of the details of your adventures when you get back home. Did you grab the udders of the jersey cow? Did the cow utter a “MOO!”? And what kind of pizza slices allowed you and your friends to down 20 each?! Bet the cheese was delish.

Love, John & Gina (Raquel’s dad and sister)
