Good morning from your Day 4 leaders Adrianna, Joe, and Emma!
We started the day off with a breakfast of avena (oatmeal) with bananas and raisins. Then, we headed over to Room 15 to begin our mental warm-up focused on the community. Once we finished, we got on the bus and headed toward the community.
Ramon, the president of the neighborhood association, greeted us with a warm welcome alongside the host families. We separated into groups and introduced the students to their host families. Each group did different activities to experience what daily life is like for a local. Some of us helped cook, clean, and do other chores to lend a hand. Others went on small hikes and saw beautiful sights like waterfalls and the areas where crops are grown.
A lot of us were especially excited to play with the kids (especially Emmita!).
Around 12 p.m., the entire community came together to share lunch and talk. Afterwards, we had some bonding time to explore, connect, and play with the locals. Joe spent time talking to his host family. The father, Jose, has a daughter named Susan who is a university graduate and now teaches young children. He also has a son who works at a supermarket.
We also learned about the local agriculture and saw a variety of plants and crops, including rosemary, corn, yuca, and squash. One major issue the community faces is a lack of water, since the area doesn’t get much rainfall.
After bonding time, we packed up and got ready to leave. Before departing, we all said goodbye and thanked our hosts for treating us like family.
Once we returned to the hotel, we did a short self-reflection where we shared our experiences with our host families. We watched a documentary and were supposed to take notes, but due to weak Wi-Fi, we couldn’t finish it—so we were given some free time instead.
For dinner, we had salami, tostones, vegetables, cheese, and ketchup on the side. Everyone loved the meal, and most of us had seconds!
We had a bit more free time afterwards—some people went to their rooms while others stayed and chatted. At our nightly meeting, tomorrow’s leaders were introduced, and we reviewed the agenda for the next day.
We had such a fun day bonding with the community and learning about their way of life—from trying new foods to learning how to cook local dishes.
We can’t wait for tomorrow’s beach day and to learn about the next place we’re visiting!
Messages from us!
