COMMUNITY DAY CON LAs familias

Hey, it’s Leislianny, Arnoldo, and Alegen, the leaders of the day. Today was community day, where we split into 3 families to immerse ourselves in their lives and culture, with the leaders helping translate between the families and the glimpsers.

Before meeting with the families, we went to a typical Costa Rican corner store called a Pulpería. There we bought cheese, oil, and cornmeal to make empanadas and tortillas with the families. On our walk to the families in the mountains, we got the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of San Rafael: dogs, birds, cows, rain, and much more.

Something that surprised all of us was how welcoming the families were despite language barriers. Additionally, it was great to see as leaders our groups being very engaged and helpful to the families who were open to sharing their space and who they are as people.

In Alegen’s group, it was a married couple, and the husband, who is a blacksmith, showed us his workshop, handicrafts, as well as shared many stories of his days as a blacksmith working with horses, and visiting horse competitions to support his business.

In Arnoldo’s group, the woman who hosted them, Angelica, actively helps the community out in multiple ways by cooking for the school, church, and other local events. She was an inspiration to the group because she is able to provide for her community, and we all commend her for that.

In Leislianny’s group, the woman who hosted them, Doña Carmen, shared how she is involved in the community in churches and senior groups. She also shared how she makes many handicrafts and sells them, such as candles and fabric flowers. They were beautiful!!

Alegen wants to shout out her Spanish teacher, Ms. Mango, for helping her learn Spanish and further connect and immerse herself in her Puerto Rican culture, as well as nominating her for the Global Glimpse, giving her the opportunity to leave the country and use her Spanish skills.

Arnoldo wants to shout out to his parents because they were the ones who taught him Spanish, and he is very grateful, as this gave him the opportunity to talk to new people and helped him engage with the community and make the transition into one family.

Leislianny wants to shout out her family for supporting her in this opportunity (I am having so much fun, love you guys!!). She also wants to shout out her friends for being so excited about this journey as well (miss you guysss).

BY THE WAY, calls will be made home tomorrow, somewhere between 3-6 pm, so be on the lookout!
