We woke up at 7:00 to get ready for the 7:15 wake-up call for the other Glimpsers. Before we left for the families’ houses, we played a name game to learn everyone’s names. At the houses, we spent time with them, asking questions about their lives in the country and immersing ourselves in Costa Rican culture. Before dinner, we had a CAP seminar where we learned about the project we would undertake for community service to support the families residing nearby. Then, we had free time to explore and get to know each other, essentially stepping out of our comfort zones. Now, we are getting ready to go to bed.

Collectively, we felt like we were embraced and included in their culture. In a sense, it was refreshing to see another person’s life for the day instead of our own at home, in Massachusetts. The language barrier was easier due to the prior knowledge we had, which was able to help the whole group.

As a group, the people who experienced language barriers felt included through activities such as cooking, playing games, gardening, and conversing. We all broke out of our comfort zones and connected on things we wouldn’t have known otherwise if we hadn’t interacted.

A special shout-out to our families for allowing us to experience this. We miss you all more than you know. Another shout out to friends, ya’ll are real ones, can’t wait to catch you guys up on all the lore. We love you and look forward to seeing you soon! <3
