Hello! Its the leader’s of the day Shavanni, Lizah and Cyleste, here to tell you all about our awesome day! We started our day with waking up all of the Glimpsers around 7:40 am this morning, and we were treated with an amazing breakfast including pancakes and eggs. We left our hotel around 10:00 am to arrive to Santa Ana Elementary School and greeted the children, who were very adorable and excited to meet new people. We first introduced ourselves to each classroom and what the purpose of our visit today was. Then, we told the class that we are students from Massachusetts, and that we would like to paint their classrooms as part of our Community Action Project! We asked the children for suggestions, and we took advice from their teachers as well. The children replied with their wants, to which they were very esctatic about. Many of them wanted animals such as cats, dogs, and birds to be painted on the walls, and others wanted flowers like the Panamanian National Flower! We visited the 6th, 4th and 3rd grade classes, and we got to speak to the staff about what the kids enjoy. They were so precious and curious about what we were doing here and were constantly smiling.

There has been a two-month long teacher strike that has affected their education this school year. Since the school is also currently under construction, the students had to leave early around 11:00. We held a conference with some of the staff to discuss the history of the school. We promised to each other that everyone would speak at least once, and we did a fantastic job being engaged. After the meeting, we boarded the bus to go back to the hotel and part of the group went to the market place, while some stayed back and enjoyed their alone time.

Once we all regrouped, we held another meeting talking and planning about the design process on what we should do with the walls of the school. We were placed into individual groups where we pitched our ideas on what we could paint onto the walls, and the teachers from the school came to the hotel to come and listen to what we conjured up! Because the majority of us are English speakers, we had a Spanish translator, Jake, who did most of the translating, so thank you Jake! Also, shout out to Sheidy and Joseliz for looking out for us, we appreciate you!

Thanks for reading our first day doing our community action project! We hope you are looking forward to us developing the design process and much more on this journey!
