Global Glimpse's fundamentals are designed by educational psychologists, teachers, community leaders, parents and students
Experiential Learning:
Global Glimpse believes the most effective way to learn material and establish long term understanding and retention is to experience the material first hand. Just as you cannot teach a person how to cook by reading a cookbook, you cannot prepare a youth for tomorrow out of a textbook
We all learn differently:
Educational research has shown that each individual learns material differently and in order to truly reach every learner, you must be able to appeal to each of these styles. There are several theories that categorize our learning style; however, Global Glimpse's approach is as diverse as possible to avoid reliance on a single theory or approach.
Some of the different ways students will learn at Global Glimpse:
Visual: See it
Auditory: Hear it, not just from a teacher, but from locals who live it
Bodily-Kinesthetic: They will be out and about in the community, sometimes trying local work like weaving or cooking
Introspective: Students will look inside themselves and be coached to reflect on the meaning of their experiences
Power of youth:
Conventional wisdom tells us that a person is most open to learning and new perspectives when they are youngest. We believe the younger a person experiences positive responsible influences, the greater impact those experiences have on them in shaping the next 60 years of their lives.
Thinking:
Simply put, we teach youth "how to think" not "what to think." Critical thinking and reasoning skills will help youth develop into responsible citizens.
Perspective:
In viewing differences it is easy to assess if you are superior or inferior. Instead, Global Glimpse believes it is more productive to ask what the similarities and differences are. We emphasize mutual understanding, respect and tolerance. In all our learning, whether it is leadership training or learning about local customs and traditions in a foreign country.
Community:
Global Glimpse works to emphasize giving back to your local community. Our programs emphasize community service though the many hours of service the participants perform in addition to our program which reinforces giving back to your local community when you return home.
